Kansai is the right airport for Osaka, Kyoto, Nara and Kobe — Kyoto is about 75 minutes by the Haruka express — and flying in here and out of Tokyo (or the reverse) is the classic open-jaw that saves a Shinkansen leg. Sydney–Osaka has fewer nonstop seats a week than Sydney–Tokyo, so its fares can move in bigger steps.
Read the score before the price. Below 65 the fare is around or above this route's own typical and waiting is the call; at 65 and up it is in the better part of its 90-day history and the card links you to the search. On a route with fewer seats a good score tends not to hang around — when it shows, act on it the same day. One to three months out is the usual sweet spot; the last fortnight is where this route punishes the undecided.
Every booking window and the 90-day range are on the Sydney–Osaka card on the Japan page. For when to go — blossom, foliage, the summer heat — read our season-by-season Japan guide.
